Why graded readers matter
I don’t need to convince anyone here of the value of graded readers. Reading at your own level helps you build fluency, expand your vocabulary, and gain reading mileage. A good thing, and graded readers are perfect for the job – especially if you’re somewhere around the intermediate level. Because even if you’ve built up decent reading skills, you might still find authentic texts like news articles, novels, or long social media posts just out of reach. That’s exactly why graded readers exist – to boost your reading skills without the frustration of having to look up every word.
What you’ll get
This graded reader contains just one story, but it’s presented in two versions: one for lower intermediate learners and another for upper intermediate. I haven’t applied any strict scientific criteria here, but I’d say the first version roughly corresponds to HSK 4/5 level, while the second leans more toward HSK 5/6 material.
The idea is that, as an intermediate learner, you’ll benefit from both versions. You can really dig in – read the story, go through the vocabulary lists, take the quiz, and most importantly, listen to the audio. The value of a graded reader doubles when there’s quality audio included. And by the way, let me know what you think of the voice work.

What’s the story about?
The story follows a young woman living in Shanghai. She rents a tiny apartment, has no friends, and an overbearing mother. She’s trying to grow her audience with creative vlogs, but her content hardly gains traction. Then, in the sweltering heat of the Chinese port city, her air conditioner breaks down. Desperate, she’s driven to bold, even reckless actions.
